HOARSE VOICE

Hoarse voice can range from being mildly hoarse, or debilitating as patients feel they have difficulty being understood.

Causes

Causes of a hoarse voice could range from muscle tension, acid reflux, benign cyst or nodules, neurological conditions causing weakness, ageing, or more worryingly a cancerous growth.

A camera test (nasolaryngoscopy) is mandatory in order to view the voicebox. If there is any growth seen, then a procedure for biopsy would be needed.

Treatment Options

If the benign growth is the cause of the hoarse voice, then removal of the growth would improve the voice. In most cases, a course of voice therapy with the help of speech therapists can be helpful to restore some function of the voice.
